The roses carry centuries of meaning. Cultivated across Persia and the Mediterranean long before they reached European gardens, the red rose has come to stand for devotion and depth of feeling more clearly than any other bloom. Here, in their darkest shade, they offer a faint, classic perfume and a layered, petal-on-petal texture that anchors the whole composition. Around them, the glossy red anthurium introduces something altogether more graphic — a heart-shaped, lacquered spathe native to the rainforests of Central and South America, prized for its architectural form and remarkable longevity rather than scent.

This mix rewards attention to water above all, since the roses drink heavily and the hydrangea takes up moisture through its petals as much as its stem, so mist the hydrangea heads and keep the vase generously filled. Re-cut the rose stems at an angle every couple of days and strip any leaves that sit below the waterline, where they cloud the water and shorten the bloom. The anthurium and chrysanthemum are the steady ones, asking little beyond clean water and a wipe of the anthurium's glossy spathe to keep it bright. Set the whole arrangement away from direct sun, draughts and ripening fruit, and refresh the water fully whenever it begins to dull.
