Gardenia is the most painterly arrangement in the collection, and the only one that refuses a single palette. Sunflowers and blue delphinium sit at opposite ends of the colour wheel and are placed deliberately close together. Between them, peach chrysanthemums, apricot garden roses, pink hydrangea and copper anthurium fill the centre, while a spray of peach phalaenopsis orchids cascades down the front and teal-dyed pampas fans out to the right.
The garden rose is distinct from the standard long-stemmed rose: bred for its many-petalled, cupped open form and its scent rather than for uniform shape or shipping durability. It opens fully rather than staying tight, so the arrangement changes character noticeably across its first week.
The delphinium provides the blue, one of the genuinely rare naturally blue cut flowers, and its florets open in sequence up the spike. The phalaenopsis, the moth orchid, is the longest-lived element by far, and the individual blooms will still be perfect long after everything around them has finished.
