HBD Leopard is a birthday card with a sense of humour that stays on the right side of elegant. A leopard sits upright and entirely composed, wearing a small striped party hat, drawn in fine pink and orange line work against a flat blush background. Behind it, a single orange circle acts as a sun and gives the illustration its weight.
The card is finished with a scalloped gold foil border that runs the full edge of the front panel, catching light along the wave. Beneath the illustration, HAPPY BIRTHDAY is set in small spaced capitals in a soft charcoal, deliberately quiet against the artwork. It is printed on a heavy uncoated card stock, so the surface holds a little texture rather than reading as glossy.
Inside, the card is blank, which is the point: it is made to be written in properly rather than to do the work for you. A fuchsia envelope is included, and the colour is chosen to sit against the blush front rather than match it.
It suits birthdays for someone with an eye for design, and it works particularly well sent with flowers rather than instead of them. Pair it with something with equal confidence in colour: the pink arrangements read as an obvious match, but it also holds its own against a brighter, more graphic piece. The card measures A6 folded, which gives a full inside page for writing rather than the narrow strip larger designs leave once the printed message is allowed for. It is sent flat in its own sleeve so the gold foil arrives unmarked, and if it is ordered with flowers it travels alongside the arrangement rather than inside it, so nothing arrives creased or damp. Cards can be ordered on their own, though most are sent as part of a delivery.
