Newborn Flower Top in Baby Girl is a plinth-top piece, made to sit on a pedestal beside a hospital suite door or a reception and be read from a distance. It is built wide rather than tall, and it spills over its base on three sides.
Pink hydrangea carries the arrangement, massed in every tone from powder to a deeper rose, and packed tightly enough that the colour changes as you move past it. Hydrangea comes from Japan and the Americas and is the only flower that can hold a form this size without gaps. Pink and blush roses open through it at intervals, bringing the piece's only real fragrance.
The yellow is what stops it turning into a single sweet mass. Butter-yellow roses open at the left, large yellow craspedia balls cluster at the centre in perfect spheres, and sprays of yellow oncidium orchid arch out at the top right. Peach chrysanthemum pompons sit between them, and lime alchemilla and white gypsophila fill in with fine green and white detail.
Long curtains of pink amaranthus fall from the front of the piece well down the face of the plinth, and a twist of cream fabric rises at the top left as a soft vertical. Amaranthus, from the Andes and Mesoamerica, has stood for endurance and unfading love for centuries. It suits newborn celebrations, hospital suites and homecoming days, and is priced per piece so it can be ordered in pairs.
Because it sits on a plinth rather than in a vase, the arrangement is built into a hydrated base and needs topping up rather than watering. Studio staff will show you where on delivery. Hydrangea is the stem to watch and will soften first if the base dries. The amaranthus dries in place and holds its colour. Kept out of direct sun and away from the air conditioning, the piece holds well through a hospital stay and the first days at home.
