Caring for your Rust & Velvet

Keep this arrangement somewhere cool and out of direct sun, as the Roses and Delphinium drink heavily and will droop quickly if the vase runs low. The Hydrangea takes in moisture through its petals as much as its stem, so a light mist and a deep, clean water level keep its full head from wilting before its time. Recut the woody Snapdragon and Rose stems at a sharp angle so they draw freely, and handle the more delicate Lisianthus and Delphinium gently, as their stems bruise and snag against firmer neighbours. Change the water every couple of days and strip any leaves that sit below the waterline, since the Carnation and Anthurium reward clean water by holding their form long after the rest. A little attention early on lets the whole composition settle and open at its own pace.

A note on your specific blooms

  • Alstroemeria — Strip any lower leaves below the waterline, as its foliage wilts well before the blooms and clouds the water.
  • Anthurium — Anthurium prefers warmth — keep it away from the cold and wipe the leaf gently.
  • Carnation — Cut stems cleanly between the swollen leaf joints rather than through them, as carnations draw water best when the node itself is left intact.
  • Delphinium — Keep the tall stems in deep, fresh water and out of draughts, as Delphinium drinks heavily and wilts quickly if the vase runs low.
  • Hydrangea — Hydrangea takes up water through its petals — mist the heads and keep the vase topped up.
  • Lisianthus — Its stems are slender and easily bruised, so handle gently and recut at an angle before placing in clean, shallow water.
  • Rose — Roses drink heavily — re-cut the stems at an angle every couple of days.
  • Snapdragon — Trim the stems on a sharp angle and refresh the water often, as snapdragons drink heavily. The florets open from the bottom of the spike upward, so pinch away the lower blooms as they fade to keep the spire looking fresh.

How long your flowers last

Expect this mix to hold beautifully for 5–7 days, with its sturdier blooms carrying on well beyond that. The Delphinium, Rose, and Hydrangea are the first to soften, the Hydrangea especially sensitive once it begins to lose water, so they set the early pace of the arrangement. Against them, the Anthurium and Carnation are the quiet endurers, often looking composed for two to three weeks, with the Alstroemeria not far behind at close to a fortnight, while Lisianthus and Snapdragon settle comfortably in the middle. As blooms fade at different rates, the arrangement shifts in character rather than ending all at once, which is part of how an Amicis composition is designed to age. The single most useful habit is to refresh the water every two days and trim the stems at an angle each time, which does more than anything else to carry the shorter-lived flowers through.
