There is a good chance the chrysanthemum is in the last bouquet you were sent, under a name you did not catch. It is the flower doing the structural work behind the roses: the tight ball of petals low in the centre, the fine radiating star near the edge, the small button closing the gap between two larger heads.
This guide covers the varieties we work with, what the flower is read to mean in different countries, how long it holds in a vase here, and which of our arrangements carry it. More than sixty arrangements on the site name it in their own description.
What is a chrysanthemum, and why is it in so many bouquets?
The florist's chrysanthemum is a hybrid rather than a wild species. North Carolina State Extension's plant toolbox describes Chrysanthemum x morifolium as a herbaceous perennial in the daisy family, Asteraceae, and as a complex hybrid involving five Chinese species, listed under common names including Florist's Chrysanthemum, Garden Mum and Mum.
What it does on the bench is set out on our own product pages. The care note on Amoré / 03 says its three chrysanthemum balls keep the structure of the arrangement while the softer stems fade, and the note on Lemon Confetti calls a piece built this heavily on the flower unusually long-lived. An arrangement needs flowers you look at and flowers that hold the shape, and the chrysanthemum is the second kind.

Classic Bloom sets premium roses and hydrangeas with pompon chrysanthemums and dried accents, and it travels as a pair of low centrepieces rather than a single piece, at 750 dirhams. The palette holds in ivory, cream and beige, so the pompons read as texture rather than colour. Its page positions it for intimate dinners, weddings and engagement parties.
What chrysanthemum does inside an arrangement
- It gives the composition a solid centre, since the head reads as one mass rather than many petals.
- It fills the space between two large heads without adding a second focal point.
- It comes in forms as different as a tight globe and a fine radiating star, so one flower can change the texture of a piece.
- It is almost never the name on the product, which is why most people have owned it without knowing.
Which chrysanthemum varieties will you see in a bouquet?
The variety names a florist uses come from the show bench. The New York Botanical Garden's chrysanthemum guide notes that the National Chrysanthemum Society has grouped the flower into 13 different classifications, Pompon and Spider among them. NC State Extension describes the Pompon Group's ray florets as packed tightly and left uncurled so that they form a tight globular bloom, the Spidery Group's as thread-like to spoon-shaped, and the Incurved Group's as turned inward to form a tight ball.
Spider and pompon are the two of those names our own product pages use, alongside ball, which is our shorthand for the densest incurved heads, and disbud, which is not a shape at all. The RHS describes disbudding as keeping the main central flower bud and removing the side buds and shoots, so the plant puts its energy into one large bloom rather than a spray of small ones.

Lemon Confetti is the clearest look at a spider head in the range. One saturated yellow chrysanthemum sits at the centre, butter-yellow spider heads open in a ring around it, each one throwing its petals out like a star, and a second dense ball anchors the middle, against green cymbidium orchid and tall white delphinium. Four sizes at 750, 1,200, 1,500 and 1,800 dirhams, suggested on its page for get-well gestures, birthdays and congratulations.
Peach chrysanthemum pompons hold the centre of Sylvan, with white phalaenopsis orchids below them and cream and blush carnations, roses and hydrangea packed around, framed by palm fronds on both sides. The four sizes run 800, 1,300, 1,840 and 2,800 dirhams.
The four names you will find on our product pages
- Spider, for the long fine petals that radiate out from the centre.
- Pompon, for the tight globe that reads as one solid shape.
- Ball, which is what we call the densest heads of all.
- Disbud, a growing method rather than a form, giving one wide bloom on the stem.
What does a chrysanthemum symbolise?
The chrysanthemum carries more meaning than most flowers, and not the same meaning in every country. Penn State Extension's note on it as the November birth flower gives the general reading as loyalty, longevity, optimism and joy, with red signifying true love, white standing for innocence, purity and honesty, and yellow referring to slighted love or a wounded heart. The Chicago Botanic Garden adds that in China it represents nobility and counts as one of the four gentlemen, and that only nobility were permitted to grow it for a long time.
In Japan the association is imperial rather than personal. The New York Botanical Garden notes that the flower is used on the Emperor's official seal and crest, and Britannica records the Order of the Chrysanthemum as Japan's highest and most exclusive order. None of that arrives with the bouquet, but it is worth knowing if the recipient grew up with it.

Astilbe works in pink alone, and the spider chrysanthemums are what stop it going soft. Pink peonies carry the romance and pink carnations give the body, and the chrysanthemum petals cut a sharper, more angular line across both. One size at 500 dirhams, offered as a gift for affection as much as for celebration.
How each chrysanthemum colour is read
- Red, for true love, in Penn State Extension's reading.
- White, for innocence, purity and honesty.
- Yellow, for slighted love, which is the one to know before you send it.
- Any colour, for loyalty, longevity, optimism and joy, which is the general reading.
Are chrysanthemums funeral flowers?
In some countries, yes, and the honest answer depends on where the recipient is from. The Chicago Botanic Garden states that countries including France, Poland and Spain regard certain types of chrysanthemum as "a symbol of death and mourning", and that it is a cultural taboo to give them as a gift. The New York Botanical Garden records the same shift, noting that some European countries adopted the flower as a symbol of death, for funerals and graves.
Our own guide to sympathy and condolence flowers reads chrysanthemum as remembrance and honour in many cultures, and that is the register it carries when it is the subject of an arrangement. In our catalogue it very seldom is. It arrives as one element inside bouquets built for birthdays, new babies and congratulations, where roses, gerbera or hydrangea hold the eye and the chrysanthemum works behind them.

Sunset Whimsy is hand-tied around orange gerberas, with disbud chrysanthemums in blush pink, pink carnations, cream lisianthus and green hydrangea gathered around them, wrapped in white, at 350 or 550 dirhams. Its own page sends it to birthdays and to a thank you that should feel personal.
If you are unsure how the flower will be read
- Ask first if the recipient is French, Polish or Spanish, or choose another focal flower.
- Pick an arrangement where chrysanthemum is one element among several rather than the subject.
- Read the product description, which names every flower in the piece.
How long do chrysanthemums last in a vase here?
The chrysanthemum sits at the long end of the range, which is the practical reason it appears in so many of our pieces. Our florists' care notes put a chrysanthemum-led arrangement well past a fortnight on fresh water alone, and the thing they flag first is the foliage: chrysanthemum leaves cloud water faster than most, so every leaf that would sit under the surface has to come off.
Iowa State University Extension's guidance on cut flowers covers the rest. Trim the bottom half an inch to an inch of stem with a sharp knife, add a commercial floral preservative, check the level daily, and replace the water entirely once it clouds or smells, which the guidance calls one of the most effective ways to prolong vase life. It also warns off remedies such as aspirin, bleach and mouthwash, some of which may shorten it instead.

Amoré / 03 shows what that buys you. Three purple chrysanthemum balls, packed tightly enough to read as one shape, sit low and central, with six fuchsia gerbera daisies around them, mauve-pink roses to the right and blue and lavender delphinium rising behind. Its page names the roses and the hydrangea as the heavy drinkers that need recutting most often, while the three balls carry the structure. Four sizes at 600, 850, 1,200 and 1,800 dirhams, for anniversaries, birthdays and romantic gifting.
Keeping a chrysanthemum arrangement in a Dubai flat
- Strip every leaf that would sit under the water before the stems go in.
- Replace the water when it clouds or smells, and top it up between changes.
- Stand it clear of direct sunlight and of an air conditioning vent.
- Use the preservative sachet that arrives with the arrangement and skip the kitchen remedies.
What colours do chrysanthemums come in?
The colour range is wider than the garden lists suggest. NC State Extension's toolbox gives the bloom colours of Chrysanthemum x morifolium as brown and copper, gold and yellow, orange, purple and lavender, and white, and names cultivars in green and in burnt orange. On the florist's bench it runs further still, into cobalt and deep navy, and two of our arrangements sit at the far ends of it.

Everleaf takes colour out of the question and works in green alone. Green chrysanthemums, green anthurium and green hydrangea carry the body, with one pale gerbera, allium heads, trailing amaranthus and a philodendron leaf wide enough to give the piece something flat to be read against. Four sizes at 750, 950, 1,500 and 1,800 dirhams.
At the other end, Salver 05 clusters dark navy chrysanthemum balls against white tulips and a single white anthurium, with powder-blue accents, on the Amicis acrylic salver tray, at 945 dirhams, offered on its page for an entrance table, a console or a desk.
Where each colour works
- Green and white for an office reception or a formal table.
- Navy and cobalt for a modern interior, where a pastel bouquet disappears.
- Peach and blush for a mother, a new baby or a thank you.
- Yellow and gold for a get well or a new business, where a soft palette says too little.
What do you write on the card?
Every product page carries a field marked Write a love letter, with room for about 600 characters, and your message travels with the arrangement. Open with the recipient's name and close with yours in full. For a printed card alongside it, add one to the same order at 25 dirhams: Birthday wishes, Congratulations! or Bright Future.

Frequently asked questions about chrysanthemums
What are mums flowers?
The same plant under a shorter name. NC State Extension lists Mum, Garden Mum and Florist's Chrysanthemum among the common names of Chrysanthemum x morifolium, so a bouquet sold as mums and one described as chrysanthemum are the same flower.
What is the difference between a spider chrysanthemum and a spider gerbera?
They are two different flowers that share one adjective, and our own pages use both. A spider chrysanthemum has the dense many-petalled head of a chrysanthemum with the petals drawn out into threads, as in Astilbe and Lemon Confetti. A spider gerbera is a daisy with a dark central disc and fine rays, as in Amoré / 13, Golden Amethyst and Parasol Twist, none of which contains chrysanthemum at all.
Which Amicis arrangements use chrysanthemum?
Across all four forms: spider in Astilbe and Lemon Confetti, pompon in Classic Bloom and Sylvan, ball in Amoré / 03 and Salver 05, disbud in Sunset Whimsy. The eight in this guide run from 350 dirhams to 2,800, and there are many more on the site where the flower is named in the description rather than the title.
Which chrysanthemum colour should I avoid sending?
Yellow, if the recipient reads flower meanings at all. Penn State Extension gives the yellow chrysanthemum as slighted love or a wounded heart, which is the opposite of what most people intend by a bright bouquet. Peach is the safer warm choice, and Sylvan carries peach pompons from 800 dirhams.
Are chrysanthemums toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists chrysanthemum as toxic to dogs, cats and horses, with sesquiterpene lactones and pyrethrins among the toxic principles, and vomiting, diarrhoea, hypersalivation, incoordination and dermatitis among the clinical signs. Keep the vase where a pet cannot reach it.
Is there a chrysanthemum season?
In the garden there is. The RHS gives chrysanthemums as in flower from September to November, and NC State Extension notes that the plant does not flower until the autumn. The arrangements on this site carry it through the year, so the only date that matters to you is the delivery date you pick.
Is the chrysanthemum what makes an arrangement expensive?
No. Price here follows size and the number of stems rather than any one flower. Astilbe is a single size at 500 dirhams and the largest Amoré / 03 is 1,800, and the chrysanthemum is central to both.
Can I ask for an arrangement without chrysanthemum?
Yes. Describe what you want on the Bespoke page, where sizes start at 800 dirhams, and the designers build to your list instead of a fixed recipe.
Do you deliver at the weekend?
Yes. Saturday and Sunday are both open in our delivery calendar, with the same windows and cutoffs as any other day, and you pick the date on the product page.
What time should I order for a same-day arrival in Sharjah?
By 2:30pm for the 11am to 4pm window, or by 8:30pm for the 5pm to 10pm window. The fee is 50 dirhams in Sharjah and 100 in Ajman and the other emirates, and delivery in Dubai is free.
