When Is the Calla Lily the Right Flower in Dubai?

The calla lily is the stem we reach for when an arrangement needs a line rather than more volume. One curved spathe does work that a dozen soft heads cannot: it draws a shape and leaves room around it for the eye to read.

Its name is the first thing to set straight, because the calla is not a lily. White and green callas suit a wedding or a condolence delivery, purple and burgundy suit a dark interior, and yellow and orange belong on a birthday. The spathe marks where it is handled, which decides how the piece is treated once it arrives.

Is a calla lily a real lily?

No, and the distance is wider than the name suggests. The NC State Extension plant toolbox places the genus Zantedeschia in the Araceae, the arum family that also holds Jack-in-the-pulpit, and states that "contrary to the common name, they are not true lilies". What reads as one glossy petal is a spathe, and the column inside it is the spadix that carries the actual flowers.

The same toolbox lists thirteen common names for the plant, among them Arum Lily, Trumpet Lily and Lily Of The Nile, which is how a flower out of southern Africa came to borrow the name of an unrelated genus. It also places the anthurium in that arum family, which makes it a closer relative of the calla than any lily is.

Fleur Blanche all-white arrangement with white calla lilies, gladiolus, roses and cymbidium orchids by Amicis Dubai

Fleur Blanche is where that structure is easiest to see, because the whole arrangement is worked in white and shape has to carry it. Gladiolus holds the vertical, white calla lilies swing out from either side on stems of their own, and the texture comes from a packed middle of white roses, carnations, narcissus and cymbidium orchid, with cream amaranthus over one edge. Four sizes are priced at 700, 1,100, 1,600 and 2,450 dirhams. Our guide to lilies in Dubai covers the oriental and asiatic types it gets confused with.

What the name does and does not tell you

  • Zantedeschia belongs to the arum family rather than to the lilies.
  • The visible funnel is a modified leaf, and the flowers sit on the column inside it.
  • Nothing in the name predicts how the stem behaves once it is in your hands.

What does a calla lily give an arrangement that other flowers cannot?

A line, and the empty space a line needs around it. Our Art Deco collection page calls that style "a discipline before it is a palette", built on symmetry, repetition and hard edges that one curve is allowed to soften. Roses, hydrangea and carnations add mass; the calla is one of very few stems that adds an edge.

Botanic Reverie arrangement with plum calla lilies and blue hydrangea by Amicis Dubai

Botanic Reverie is the clearest example we hold. Blue hydrangeas carry the volume, plum calla lilies cut across it, and the page describes the craspedia in it as "points of light"; it also credits the callas with lending the piece its line and architecture. Four sizes run at 600, 850, 1,200 and 1,500 dirhams.

How to tell a sculptural arrangement from a full one

  • Look for stems that stand clear of the mass instead of filling it.
  • Count the colours, since a confined palette reads as designed and a wide one as gathered.
  • Check the vessel, because a structural vase carries half of the silhouette.
  • Look at the outline, because a sculptural piece is fan-shaped or asymmetrical rather than domed.

What colours does the calla lily come in besides white?

More than the florist's default suggests. The University of Georgia calla guide by James Garner, held in NC State's HortScans library, splits the genus into cool-season types that are predominantly white and warm-season types whose flowers run through yellow and pink. The NC State toolbox adds named cultivars with a pink spathe, a red spadix, a burgundy spathe and green striping.

Golden Amethyst hand-tied bouquet of deep purple calla lilies and yellow spider gerberas by Amicis Dubai

Golden Amethyst is our most direct use of a coloured calla: deep purple callas hand-tied against bright yellow spider gerberas, with neutral wrapping that leaves the contrast in the open. Two sizes are priced at 350 and 550 dirhams, the least expensive way into the flower.

Retro Bloom arrangement with two orange calla lilies, lilac hyacinth, hydrangea and copper anthurium by Amicis Dubai

Retro Bloom sets two orange callas against lilac hyacinth, mauve hydrangea and sky-blue delphinium, with copper-gold anthuriums repeating the warm note and gold amaranthus through the middle. It comes in four sizes at 750, 1,200, 1,500 and 1,800 dirhams. In yellow, Poolside Petals spreads callas from three points of a blue and white composition, at the same four prices.

Choosing a calla colour

  • White and green stay formal, so they suit a wedding, an office or a condolence delivery.
  • Purple and burgundy read as evening, which suits an anniversary dinner or a gift with some drama in it.
  • Yellow and orange we keep for birthdays and congratulations.
  • Blush is the gentlest of these, warm without pushing for attention.

When is a white or green calla lily the right choice?

When the arrangement should read as composed rather than warm. White and green give you the calla's shape with no colour message attached, and that neutrality is why the same flower serves a bridal bouquet in the morning and a sympathy delivery in the afternoon. Green also keeps an all-white scheme from going cold, the risk in any single-colour design.

Orchid Cascade bridal bouquet with green calla lilies, white phalaenopsis orchids and peonies by Amicis Dubai

Orchid Cascade is our bridal piece built on that reading. White phalaenopsis orchids form the cascading body, green calla lilies draw the architectural line through it, and white peonies, stock flowers and trailing amaranthus soften the outline, finished by hand with crystal stars, seashells and pearl pins. It comes in one size at 1,500 dirhams. For a bride who wants the shape without the white, Flamevine Elegance works in red and burnt orange callas, with twisted bare branches and trailing asparagus fern, at 1,200 dirhams.

Calla lilies at a wedding

  • Hold one calla colour across the bouquet and the tables rather than varying it.
  • Order a day early so the bouquet is in your hands before the setup starts.
  • Orchid Cascade and Flamevine Elegance each come in one size only, so a matching set of bridesmaid bouquets goes through Bespoke.
  • For sympathy, send white alone and write the note by hand.

Where does a dark calla lily work best?

Against something hard. Our Art Deco page is direct about this: it steers geometric work towards the host stand of a restaurant, a bar, or a console in an unlit hallway, and warns that the same piece reads heavy in a pale, quiet room. A near-black calla is the sharpest version of both.

Eclipse 12 arrangement with burgundy calla lilies, caramel roses and dried seasonal elements by Amicis Dubai

Eclipse 12 is built on that spine. Burgundy callas curl through caramel roses and textured chrysanthemums, with layered dried elements underneath and a palette that moves through bronze, mocha and plum. Sizes run 500, 800, 950 and 1,100 dirhams. Statement takes it further, setting near-black callas with coral roses, burgundy anthuriums, lotus pods and red berry branches in a black vase, at 1,500 dirhams.

Placing a dark arrangement

  • Give it a plain surface, because pattern underneath competes with the outline.
  • We would choose a brass or black vessel over clear glass for this palette.
  • Leave the space around it empty, since the silhouette is the point.

How do you handle calla lilies once they arrive?

Gently, because the calla is the one stem in a mixed arrangement you should not move. The University of Georgia guide lists "a susceptibility to mechanical damage" among the disorders that affect callas, and our own pages for Poolside Petals and Retro Bloom give the practical version: the calla marks wherever it is touched, so it should stay exactly where the florist set it. The same guide also notes that callas are harvested open but before the pollen sheds.

Soft Noor arrangement with blush calla lilies, peach roses, yellow cymbidium orchids and pink hydrangea by Amicis Dubai

Soft Noor shows why the rule matters in a busy piece. Blush callas sit among yellow cymbidium orchids, peach roses, orange gerberas and pink hydrangea, so the temptation is to push the stems around until the balance looks right. Four sizes run at 650, 850, 1,500 and 1,850 dirhams. Our guide to keeping cut flowers alive in a Dubai summer covers water and placement.

What our product pages ask you to do

  • Cut the stem ends on arrival, then give it clean water every second or third day.
  • Position it clear of direct sunlight, vents and open doors.
  • Top it up daily when the piece also carries hydrangea or delphinium.
  • Leave the callas alone once they are in place.

What do you write on the card sent with a calla lily arrangement?

Our product pages carry a field marked Write a love letter, and whatever you type there is printed and sent with the flowers. Open with the recipient's name and sign yours in full, so the card reads clearly to anyone who sees it. On a sculptural arrangement, keep it short.

A printed greeting card can be added to the same order at 25 dirhams. Wedding Card draws a pair of swans whose necks leave a heart in the gap between them, and Congratulations! puts green bubble lettering on a cream and orange checkerboard.

How much does a calla lily bouquet cost in Dubai?

Arrangements in the lily collection, where the calla sits alongside the true lilies, start at 350 dirhams. Our Art Deco collection gives this article its design language, but its own pieces start at 500 dirhams and none of them is built on a calla, so order from the arrangements above. More than twenty purchasable arrangements on the site name calla lilies in their description, so the table gathers only the ones discussed here.

Arrangement Calla colour Suits Prices by size (AED)
Golden Amethyst Deep purple A hand-tied gift at the lowest price 350, 550

If none of these carries the colour or the scale you want, describe it on the Bespoke page and our designers build the piece around your brief, in sizes priced at 800, 1,000, 1,700 and 2,500 dirhams. Our Art Deco page allows between two and five working days for bespoke work in that style, since each deco design calls for varieties that are ordered in.

Frequently asked questions about calla lilies

Should you choose a calla lily or an anthurium for a modern arrangement?

Both sit in the same family, so the choice is one of shape. The NC State Extension toolbox gives the anthurium a leathery spathe with the spadix set at right angles to it, which reads as a flat plane, where the calla's furls into a curve. Statement, at 1,500 dirhams, holds the two of them together, near-black callas against burgundy anthuriums.

Are calla lilies toxic to cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA lists calla lily, Zantedeschia aethiopica, as toxic to dogs and toxic to cats, with insoluble calcium oxalates as the toxic principle. The clinical signs it gives are "oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of mouth, tongue and lips" along with "excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing". In a home with a cat or a dog, place it where neither can reach.

Is a true lily more dangerous to a cat than a calla?

They are different risks. For the Easter lily, Lilium longiflorum, the ASPCA lists "vomiting, inappetence, lethargy, kidney failure, and death is possible", and adds that "cats are only species known to be affected". The calla is listed with oral and digestive signs rather than kidney failure, but neither belongs within a pet's reach.

What does a calla lily mean?

There is no settled answer from a botanical authority. Clemson University's guide to the language of flowers works through roses, carnations, orchids and tulips without mentioning the calla, so the meanings in circulation are convention rather than rule. Our own pages read it as elegance and composure, which is a description of the shape more than a coded message.

How long do calla lilies last in a vase?

We do not give a day count for the calla itself, because the horticultural figures come from growing and storage trials rather than from a living room: the University of Georgia guide reports three to four days of dry storage at 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Our own guide to lilies in Dubai puts the wider lily family at eight to fourteen days when it is looked after, and the care note on each product page decides the rest.

Do calla lilies have a scent?

Very little, which is often the reason to choose them. The Botanic Reverie page describes the callas in it as largely unscented, which is useful for a hospital room, an office or anyone who finds oriental lilies overpowering. If you want scent, it has to come from another stem in the design.

Does a calla lily arrangement arrive in a vase?

Each product page says which. Statement is composed in a black vase at 1,500 dirhams and Fleur Blanche is sent in an Amicis copper box, while Golden Amethyst is hand-tied in neutral wrapping at 350 or 550, so that one needs a vessel at your end. Since the callas should stay as the florist set them, stand a hand-tied bouquet in the water as it was tied.

Which flowers in a calla arrangement outlast the callas?

The anthuriums and the dried elements, by our own product pages. Poolside Petals, from 750 dirhams, says its anthurium outlives the rest of the piece and can finish in a small vase by itself, and Eclipse 12, from 500 dirhams, says its dried elements keep their shape after the fresh stems are finished.

Can calla lilies be grown in a Dubai garden?

It is a marsh plant, which is the obstacle. The NC State toolbox places Zantedeschia aethiopica in marshes and along the edges of streams and ponds, in soil that stays moist, and adds that a hot climate needs partial shade or the leaves and flowers scorch. Here it arrives as a cut stem instead, from 350 dirhams for Golden Amethyst to 2,450 for the largest Fleur Blanche.

Can a calla lily arrangement reach a Dubai address today?

Yes. In Dubai, order by 4:30pm for the 10am to 6pm window or by 9pm for the evening one, with delivery free. Sharjah and Ajman close at 2:30pm and 8:30pm, Abu Dhabi at 4pm and 7:30pm, and Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Al Ain at 4pm.

Do you sell calla lilies on their own, without other flowers?

Our calla pieces are mixed designs rather than single-variety bunches. The closest is Flamevine Elegance at 1,200 dirhams, where the only other elements are bare branches and asparagus fern, then Golden Amethyst at 350, which pairs the callas with one other flower.

What should a bespoke calla brief include?

The Bespoke page works from a brief rather than a catalogue: the mood, the occasion, which colours and styles you like, and the room the piece will stand in. For an Art Deco commission our collection page also asks to see the room in a photograph, with the vessel you are picturing. Its own photographs show style rather than a design you can order, and a wedding gets a consultation first.
