Are Blue Roses Real, and What Do They Mean?

Blue roses do not make blue pigment of their own, so the blue always arrives from somewhere else: a laboratory, a breeding programme, or a florist's dye. That is worth knowing before you order, because it changes what you are choosing between.

If the blue itself is the point, look at the monochrome pieces, The Royale and Bleu. If you would rather have blue that grew that way, ask for delphinium and hydrangea, which is what Blue Jeans and Windsor are built on. For a gift that should read as celebration, blue against one warm colour does it.

Are blue roses real?

No rose makes blue pigment by itself. Writing in the journal Breeding Science in 2018, Naonobu Noda records that high-volume ornamentals, the rose among them, lack the key genes for producing the blue delphinidin pigment. Two routes have got around that. Inserting the F3'5'H gene does produce delphinidin in roses and carnations, which Noda says turns the flower colour purple or violet, and cross-breeding roses that contain rosacyanins has given what he describes as a greyish purple or mauve flower colour.

The first of those routes produced what Noda calls the world's first blue rose, Suntory blue rose Applause. Neither is a stem a florist orders by the box. What we can put in an arrangement is the third thing, a pale rose given its colour by hand, and our Bleu page says so in as many words.

The Royale all-blue arrangement of blue roses, cobalt hydrangea, blue dendrobium orchid and blue carnations by Amicis Dubai

The Royale works in one colour and lets depth do the rest. Blue roses sit in the body of it with blue carnations and a blue dendrobium orchid, hydrangea in cobalt and aqua fills out the shape, white delphinium spires lift the back, and blue pom-pom chrysanthemums with white craspedia break up the mass. Soft feathers, silver anthurium and blue-tinted asparagus fern close the edges, and the piece is built into the white Amicis cylinder. Two sizes are priced at 1,500 and 2,500 dirhams, and its page names the blue roses without saying how that blue arrived.

What to settle before you order blue roses

  • Decide whether the blue itself is the point, or whether flowers that grew blue would serve you better.
  • Ask which stems carry the blue, since hydrangea, delphinium, orchid and anthurium reach it by different routes.
  • Expect a depth of colour no garden reaches, which is the reason the treatment gets used at all.

How are blue roses made?

The principle is uptake through the stem rather than paint on the petal. Nebraska Extension at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln sets out the home version: dissolve food colouring in warm water with a little sugar, stand fresh cut stems in about three inches of it, and lift the flower out once the colour arrives, which can take anywhere from one to 24 hours. The florist's version is a specialist form of the same route, and our own Bleu page calls that finish "colour-treated by hand".

Bleu monochrome blue arrangement of cobalt roses, blue hydrangea, agapanthus and delphinium by Amicis Dubai

Bleu is the design that says plainly how it is done. Its page describes deep cobalt roses at the centre, ringed by blue hydrangea, pompon chrysanthemums, tall delphinium and round agapanthus heads, with a blue anthurium and white narcissus set against them. The same page notes that the agapanthus and delphinium carry real blue without help, while its roses, and several accent stems with them, are colour-treated by hand, a finish it describes as "a deliberate choice rather than a compromise". Four sizes run at 750, 1,050, 1,450 and 2,250 dirhams.

Dyed, tinted and preserved are three different things

  • Dyed stems draw colour up through the stem while the flower is still drinking.
  • Tinted is the word our product pages use for the anthurium, orchid and gerbera that arrive blue by that same route.
  • Preserved work is separate again, and the piece we hold, Moon Flower Structure, is framed in preserved hydrangea rather than roses.
  • Bespoke work starts from the exact blue you describe rather than from a stem we already hold.

Which blue flowers are blue without any help?

Fewer than you would hope, and they are the better answer for most people. The North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox, published by NC Cooperative Extension, lists delphinium flowers as blue to purple or nearly white. Clemson University's Home and Garden Information Center explains that a hydrangea reads blue only where the soil is acidic enough to make aluminium available to it, so even hydrangea blue is conditional. Our Bleu page names agapanthus and delphinium as the stems in that arrangement carrying real blue unaided, and Noda adds cornflower, nemophila and blue poppy, where blue comes from pigment bound into metal complexes.

Blue orchid and blue anthurium are not on that list, and our own pages are explicit about it. Baby Boy opens on tinted blue anthurium, and the Bluebell page says its tinted blue "reads as deliberate rather than novelty". They are treated stems, which is how they hold so saturated a blue.

Blue Jeans bouquet of white roses with blue hydrangea and blue delphinium by Amicis Dubai

Blue Jeans is the cleanest way into the palette. White roses give it structure, blue hydrangea brings the volume, and blue delphinium carries the height, with eucalyptus through it and one bold blue monstera leaf as the modern note. It comes in a single size at 500 dirhams. For the same blue and ivory register across four sizes, Windsor is built on blue hydrangea with white roses and white carnations, at 450, 650, 1,100 and 1,500 dirhams.

Which blue stems grew that way, and which were treated

  • Delphinium arrives blue on its own, and gives height and movement at the back of an arrangement.
  • Hydrangea can be blue on its own, though Clemson's factsheet ties that to acid soil and available aluminium.
  • Agapanthus is the third, named on our Bleu page as carrying real blue unaided.
  • Orchid and anthurium are tinted, which is what lets them hold a blue no grown stem reaches.

What do blue roses mean?

Less than the internet suggests, and that is useful. Clemson's guide to the language of flowers sets out readings for four rose colours: red for love and passion, pink for affection, grace and gratitude, white for purity, innocence and reverence, and yellow for friendship, joy and gladness. No blue rose appears among them. The same guide does give blue a meaning on a different flower, saying blue hyacinths symbolise consistency and sincerity.

Our reading of that gap is straightforward. Those dictionaries were compiled when no blue rose existed to be assigned a meaning, so blue carries no inherited obligation: it says nothing about romance or sympathy by default, and lands as a choice the sender clearly made. That is why it suits a corporate desk, a design-led home, and a recipient who already owns every version of red and pink.

Bluebell arrangement of tinted sky-blue phalaenopsis orchid, navy anthurium and cobalt hyacinth by Amicis Dubai

Bluebell runs one colour across its whole range. A long spray of tinted phalaenopsis orchid in sky blue opens across the left, two navy anthuriums at the upper right read almost black, three cobalt hyacinth heads carry the deepest tone, and blue-green hydrangea with pale delphinium fills the register between them. White gladiolus, white delphinium and a white rose low on the right are what keep the blue readable. Four sizes are priced at 750, 1,200, 1,500 and 1,800 dirhams, and the page positions it for new arrivals, congratulations and gifting chosen for the palette itself.

What blue says when it arrives

  • Considered rather than romantic, which is why it works in an office.
  • Rare, because the colour is uncommon in a florist's window and the recipient knows it.
  • Deliberate, because nobody arrives at blue by default.

Which blue arrangements can you order in Dubai?

Split it by setting rather than price: a monochrome piece holds a desk on its own, blue and white suits a home that already has a palette, and blue against one warm colour reads as celebration.

Poolside Petals arrangement of cobalt anthurium, blue delphinium and blue hydrangea with yellow calla lilies by Amicis Dubai

Poolside Petals starts as blue and white, then lets two warm colours open it up. Three cobalt anthuriums sit at the right in a deep inky blue, two white anthuriums answer on the left, and blue hydrangea heads with blue delphinium spikes hold every paler blue between them. Yellow calla lilies arc out at three points, a yellow chrysanthemum ball sits at the centre as the anchor, and the bird of paradise at the top opens in orange and blue at once, with a second orange bloom at mid-left. Four sizes run at 750, 1,200, 1,500 and 1,800 dirhams.

For a vase piece with the same contrast, Vibe sets blue hydrangea and vivid blue disbud chrysanthemum against orange gladiolus and papery physalis, at 1,000 dirhams. At the lower end, Cyan Bloom puts blue chrysanthemums with green hydrangea, an ivory gerbera and a sculptural blue succulent, at 400 dirhams.

Choosing between the blue pieces

  • Monochrome for a desk, lobby or console where it is the only colour.
  • Blue with yellow or orange for a birthday or a congratulations.
  • One-sided arrangements face forward, so give them a wall behind.

How do you look after dyed and tinted blue flowers?

Our care notes single out two risks that matter more for treated stems than for untreated ones. The Poolside Petals page warns that direct sun takes the colour out of a tinted blue sooner than out of a natural one, and the Bluebell page adds that a tinted bloom dries faster in the draught from an air conditioning vent than it does in heat. On water the two pages differ: Poolside Petals names hydrangea and delphinium as heavy drinkers wanting a top-up every day or two if the room is warm, while Bluebell singles out hydrangea alone as the stem to watch.

Baby Boy arrangement of tinted blue anthurium, blue phalaenopsis orchid and blue hydrangea in a brass vase by Amicis Dubai

Baby Boy keeps to three colours. Tinted blue anthurium hovers on fine stems over a large blue phalaenopsis at the centre, blue hydrangea heads fill out the body, white hydrangea lightens the base, and one navy chrysanthemum marks the darkest point. Craspedia and sprays of oncidium orchid carry the yellow that stops the blue from going cold, and the whole composition is raised on a footed brass vase. It is a single size at 2,500 dirhams.

Keeping blue flowers blue

  • Top up the water every day or two where hydrangea or delphinium is doing the volume.
  • Recut and refill as soon as hydrangea heads soften, which is the Bluebell page's advice.
  • Move the orchid and anthurium to a small vase once the softer stems are spent.

What do you write on the card that goes with blue flowers?

Every product page carries a field marked Write a love letter, and whatever you type there is printed and travels with the arrangement at no extra cost. Blue is the palette where that card does the most work, because the colour itself states nothing: put the occasion in the first line rather than leaving it to the flowers.

blue note card is the obvious match at 15 dirhams, scarlet poppies printed over deep blue. If the message is about a beginning rather than a thank you, Bright Future is 25 dirhams, black with hand-lettered white type reading your future looks bright.

How much do blue flowers cost in Dubai?

Arrangements in the blue flowers collection start at 350 dirhams, and the designs in this guide run from 350 up to 2,500. Two pieces sit at that floor, both at 350 and 550: Prism Bloom, whose page opens on blue hydrangea against rich red roses, and Poetic Haze, which sets vivid blue delphinium among blush roses and pink and violet hydrangeas.

Frequently asked questions about blue roses and blue flowers

Does a genuinely blue rose exist anywhere in the world?

Not in the sense of sky blue. Noda's review explains why the colour keeps landing on violet instead: rose petals tend to express redness because of the high acidity of their vacuoles, and blue needs a weakly acidic pH of about 5.6 to 6.2. The engineered rose carries the right pigment and still sits in the wrong chemistry.

Can you buy blue roses in Dubai?

Not as loose stems. Blue roses reach you inside an arrangement, so the choice is between a monochrome piece and a blue and white one, and if you want more blue than any ready design holds, the Bespoke page takes a description.

Do dyed roses last as long as untreated ones?

We have no published figure to quote you either way, so we will not claim one. What our own care notes do say is specific: sunlight drains a tinted blue sooner than a natural one, and the draught from an air conditioning vent dries treated blooms sooner than heat.

Why has my blue hydrangea turned pink?

Soil chemistry, if it is a growing plant rather than a cut stem. Clemson's factsheet gives pH 5.0 to 5.5 for blue flowers and 6.0 and above for pink, because pH is what decides whether aluminium is available to the plant.

Which blue arrangement is the least expensive?

Prism Bloom and Poetic Haze at 350 dirhams, then Cyan Bloom at 400 and Windsor at 450. The first two carry blue among other colours rather than leading with it, so Cyan Bloom and Windsor are the ones that read blue first.

Can I order an arrangement in blue and nothing else?

Close to it, rather than exactly. Bleu and The Royale are both worked as a single colour, but each leans on white to keep the blue readable: white narcissus in Bleu, white delphinium and craspedia in The Royale.

Are blue flowers a safe choice for a corporate gift?

They are one of the safest, because the colour carries no romantic reading. The Royale's page positions it for exactly that: a corporate setting or a modern interior, where the familiar pinks and reds would read as too personal.

Can I send blue flowers for a new baby?

Baby Boy is built for it at 2,500 dirhams, in blue, yellow and white on a footed brass vase. Bluebell is the alternative across four sizes from 750 dirhams, and its page lists new arrivals among its occasions.

Which blue flower lasts longest in an arrangement?

Orchid and anthurium. The Bluebell page says both outlast the rest of that arrangement and can be moved into a small vase once its delphinium and gladiolus are over, while the Poolside Petals page, which holds no gladiolus, names anthurium alone.

Can I get blue flowers delivered the same day?

Yes. In Dubai, order by 4:30pm for the 10am to 6pm window or by 9pm for the 4pm to 11pm one. Sharjah and Ajman close at 2:30pm and 8:30pm, Abu Dhabi at 4pm and 7:30pm, and the far emirates at 4pm.
